Types of Kimono: Uchikake

Uchikake is the wedding kimono. The most gorgeous, as should any wedding dress, and the most expensive kimono. There are two pieces of this wedding kimono – one is the white one called Shiro-maku and the other more elaborate piece usually in red is the Uchikake. Shiro-maru is worn during the wedding ceremony and the Uchikake is worn during the wedding reception.

The Uchikake is very long and the bride usually needs an aide to help her carry her wedding dress as she walks. The design on the wedding kimono ranges from cranes to flowers and other nature motives. While red is the most popular color for the Uchikake, other colors like imperial purple and sea green are also available. Most people rent their wedding kimono because it’s so expensive, most of the time the material used is silk, but rental alone costs USD5000!

Here are some pictures of Uchikake.
