Gothic Baby doll Dresses
Gothic and Baby Doll dresses are quite “in” within the Japanese teen community. Girls dressing up as gothically cute as possible…hence, the name Gothic Lolita is given. I hope they know that Lolita is also a term used as a sexual term for underage girls. Anyway, the Gothic Lolita look is also closely related to the french maid look cos the french maid costume is very lolita-ish. It is the fantasy of men world wide to come across a willing french maid in her french maid costume….err…well, let’s just say the french maid costume is very closely connected to a certain sexual fantasy.
But that does not deter the fashion in Japan. Gothic Lolita is a well known dress code. In fact you will see many girls in their gothic lolita fashion strutting around with their black baby doll dresses and sombre make up.
Here are some gothic lolita fashion for you to see:

No, not really. These are two different realms. French maid outfits/otaku-manga cafes of akihabara is one. Lolita/Gothic lolita is another; they draw inspiration more from french “rococo” and english victorian fashion for upper class kids, mixed with a bunch of other influences.
By the way, your “elegant gothic lolita” is Mana http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mana_(musician)

No, actually you interpreted the Lolita style incorrectly. Most Lolitas didn’t actually see the connection between the book “Lolita” until an article was published in the Gothic and Lolita Bible about the book “Lolita.”
Also, most Lolitas would rather look “cute and elegant” not “sexy.” The Lolita fashion is more about portraying innocence and finding one’s inner princess; not dressing up in a French Maid outfit. That is something completly different.

I enjoyed the article, but I wasn’t sure you were aware your example of “elegant gothic lolita” is a man named Mana. There is nothing wrong with that but many people are unaware of this.

2 of ur pics are man and he’s the originator of this style and it really has nothing to do with the french maid style that was another big thing in Japanese fashion a wile ago tho mans inspiration is mainly from the french dresses and Victorian era dresses not maids

joseph: Mana did not create the lolita style – it was around way before him. But he did make it very popular while he was guitarist in the band Malice Mizer.
Ironically, women in japan who dress in lolita know that it doesn’t attract men and the only men in japan attracted to the style are creepy otakus or crossdressers.
