Japanese Hairstyles

Hairstyles for Japanese, Korea, Chinese and Taiwanese are similar to one another because they copy each other. I don’t know, the last I saw in Malaysia which was last year, the hairstyle Chinese youngsters sport are similar to the ones in Japan. For the guys it looks like this:

The girls almost always sports the loooong or short straight hair. Of course we also have the occassional curly kawai kind of hair style. Here are a few:

I haven’t hightlighted the super gutsy hairdos that some of them sport, of course. But usually this is the everyday hairstyle you can expect to see in countries like Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, etc. I mean, I’m asian, I should know. It’s easier to sport a long straight hair than to curly it up because spending 30 minutes in front of the mirror after shower everytime is a damn waste of my precious time, imho. Since most of us naturally have straight hair anyway.

Do any of you have a hairstyle you like? I know someone, a caucasian guy who likes the asian cut since he got back from Japan. I think he told me that he prefers asian hairstylists too. I don’t blame him, I prefer asian hairstylists too but the caucasian hairdresser who lives near me does a pretty good job as well. :)

p.s: i am aware a picture up there belongs to an asian artist name Kenny Kwan. I don’t know who he is though.

p.p.s: I really meant most asians sport the same hairstyle in post, which is why i said “similar” initially… :)

  1. Moss Says:

What is your second sentence supposed to mean? What does what you saw in Malaysia have to do with China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan? What is the point of this post? You grabbed a bunch of random pictures of hairstyles of Asians and wrote a bunch of sentences without putting any thought into any of it. You need to get away from the keyboard for a while and cut down on your posts. Give it a rest.

  2. The Expedited Writer Says:

    Dear Moss,

You wouldn’t get it if you’re caucasian but I’ll explain. People from China, HK, Msia, Japan, Korea, SG, et. al. has the same hairstyles and hair cuts. I kid you not. So, if you haven’t been to any of these countries except for Japan, please don’t write comments like this because it doesn’t make you look smart.

The whole purpose of the post is to say that most asian men and women in various Asian countries share the same fashion sense in hairstyle. It could be that one are copying another but the point is this: They are similar if not almost identical.

    Love,
    The Expedited Writer

  3. Moss Says:

Wow, I can’t believe you insulted me by saying I wouldn’t “get” it if I’m caucasian, and what I wouldn’t get is that people from Asia all have the same hairstyles? Seriously?? I’ve spent time in China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Korea, and Japan, and it most certainly is _not_ true that they all wear the same hair. Even just jumping on a ferry to Korea gives you a view of whole new set of hairstyles. Heck, I don’t even usually notice fashion or hair and I noticed that.

Your posts seem very narrow-minded and not well thought out. I get the impression you haven’t experienced very much beyond what you’ve learn by searching google for a few seconds.

  4. The Expedited Writer Says:

I wouldn’t call it an insult really…I’d state it as a fact that you are caucasian so you might not know much about asians even though you might think you do.

You see, I live in the city and where I come from a lot of the guys and girls have the same hairstyle as would a jap and a korean, for example. And of course, there are exceptions where there can be difference. You can’t be so daft as to think i claim all asians have the same hair, can you? I said “most asians” in general wear the same hairstyle and cut.

You’re right, sometimes I just google search for a few seconds to get some pics…and my posts reflects my opinion, Mossie – narrow minded as you might think they are, we are all different and have preferences. I don’t mind you posting shit here as I believe in the freedom of speech, I could easily block your comments out to reserve my “good name” but i can’t fathom why you can’t let me have the freedom to express myself unless you’re the narrow minded one here…:)

  5. Wessel Says:

I agree with Moss on this subject. Hairstyles across Asia differ a lot between different countries.

  6. yen Says:

    calm it cool kids

  7. SS Says:

Oh oh.. ^^ .. Uhm.. Most Asian people share the same view of hair.. ( I mean most.. not all ^^ ).. You can see this yourself, or you can ask people who are from an European country or have been living in Europe for a long time ( like my sister.. ).. Of course, nothing is absolute! When we use the word “same”, it can’t be absolutely the same! Look, with 1 way of hair-cutting, this person doesn’t look like the another one due to their faces, their hair-tying way..etc. In short, cause Asian people actually have some similarities in their faces –> they have similar view of hair-styles which are suitable to them ^^.. That’s my opinion.. Take care..

  8. Lau Says:

    Hello,

Just drop by in searching for topics on hairstyle as my hair is getting longer and messier.

Oooh, most Asian men (chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Malaysian, Singaporean, Thais, Indonesians, bla bla, bla…. cough cough…) and women (japanese, chinese, my fingers are getting tired… ) shared the same taste on hair fashion? Well, because most asian men and women go to the same hairstylist on the high street who have no idea how to give the best to their customers, hence reaching a pair of scissors and cut cut cut, and then they realise one fact – that all ASIANS hair textures are none others but straight!

  9. rath mony Says:

    hey

  10. w Says:

the hairsof the guys should be more as maybe there will be more customers

  11. tom Says:

whats up with the “all asians have straight hair” thing… i dont know about all the other asians but… ive seen alot of japanese poeple say themselves that most japanese people dont naturally have straight hair.. and that most japanese people have wavy hair.. this could also be the reason why the best hair straightening method that can last for 6 to 8 months (in some cases longer like 12 months)that is called bio-ionic hair straightening or IHR (ionic hair retexturising) or just japanese hair straightening(theres lots of different names)was invented in japan and is extremely popular in japan… it can be done on most hair types apart from some like afro-american and very curly… it is very expensive in the west and can cost up to 1000 american dollars… it is VERY cheap to have done in japan, korea, china and other asian countries… but like i said i dunno how it is in the rest of asia…

  12. Youko Says:

the hair may be curly but the structure of the hair is the same (ok sounds opposite meaning…)
Anyway I have curly hair (which annoys me) but I still do have the asian structure of hair.
My hair is still suited for most common asian hairstyles you can see everyday. (the problem is that caucasians in the country I live never found out how to cut my hair)
I think that this article wasn’t really that helpful for me as it left me with no new information whatsoever. But I agree that anyone can write whatever he desires and does not deserve to be attacked anyhow.
But the question about hairstyles in asia still stands (I would say).
But I think it’s for us to find the answer out. It is quite relative and difficult to judge as this can be quite subjective.

  13. Jimi Says:

Ignorance. After living in Asia for most of my life and traveling all over …all I can say is that the Asians especially the Japanse have some very unique dress styles. They are COOL. I think most american fashions…at least with mens…all look the same. Mens fashion in the US sucks. Italy, Japan, Uk all blows us away. Americas look like almost all of them shop at wallmart (cheap immagrant clothing) …wait a minute they do mostly shop at wallmart what was the poll again 78%…….then they spend 100% bitching about the immagrants.

  14. S.A. Says:

Individual humans, however unique, are alike more than different, yet they keep warring amongst each other.

  15. Cin Says:

    Well technically it does’nt matter.
Because it’s thier sense of fashion. They like to do whatever they want. It seems like some one here is a tiny bit jelous. The asian probally want to stick to whats in and whats out. Of corse you want nice hair, not like ugly 80’s (hair).

  16. david Says:

I am Malaysian and I would like to say that those are definitely not typical styles you expect to see. Those are more the type you would see in magazines.. if you want to see typical styles photos of typical people on the street would be better

  17. eli Says:

    hehe

  18. Moss Says:

i totally disagree did u hear me !@#!@#!
ALL ASIAN HAIR STYLES LOOK THE SAME
BECAUSE IM FROM OUTTA SPACE, I AM MENTALLY RETARDED LIKE THE GUY WHO MADE THIS BLOG

  19. Ll Says:

I have to say, from my experience as a hairstylist, you are an idiot, u dnt know nething, so stop wasting ur time with this crap, and donttell me tht i dntnoe nethin cos i am jpnese, you are pathetic

  24. milky Says:

lmao ‘expedited writer’ i can tell that you are not japanese ^.^

i think most asians copy japan, all the small asian stores you see in US, UK and other countries all sell japanese character goods, although they are usually owned by chinese/korean people.
    and i noticed most sushi bars are run by koreans, not japanese -_-;;

japan starts all the trends i think, and all the other countries copy but give their own variation hence to why some people argue that the styles are different and some argue they are the same.

  25. cleo Says:

ppl in asia dun hav da same hair style!!they look alike only..btw, western ppl also have da same hairstlye.i remember watching american idol n guess wat? da girls wear da same hairstyle..i mean SAME! like twins(in dat case it is not twins, should be quadruplets or more)..woooshhh.all da hairstlye comes from anime la..wat ever da anime wear, so ppl will.so the more u watch anime the more likely u will look like them..no offense!!

  26. surianee Says:

Well the answer it doesn’t matter where you came from , if the hairstyles suits you then go for it..

of course asian hair is finer then caucasian.. thats why you tend to see similar styles across the countries..then again.. why not?as long as the style suits you .. I don’t see anyone saying going bald belongs to a particular country do we?

  27. Lyka Says:

Yeah , she is Right.. some Asians have the same hairtyle, they are have that curly, some are oneside style, and girls always have that cute bangs

  28. Voyse Says:

…Wow. I’m not trying to be offensive here… (Although I might as well be since, Hey! It’s what all of you are doing! *My pardon to the innocent ones in this.) But can’t you just be a little polite? It’s just an opinion and even if you don’t like it that doesn’t mean you should be so rude to another person. Really, relax a little. It won’t kill you. *sigh* Although I’m not sure why I’m saying this anyway. Oh, and all of the above, was an opinion by the way. Don’t wig out because of it. I wouldn’t want my pathetic words to give someone a stroke after all. Think of the medical bill I’d be charged with.

Once again I apologize for intruding. I originally only came here for the hairstyles, but your argument drew my attention, I couldn’t help it. I enjoy arguments, but they’re not very enjoyable when people are stupid about the way they do it. Be smart! I say, If you’re going to diss someone -do it right!

This all has been useless rambling on my part and for that I once again apologize. Have a good one! (Have a good day I mean.)

  29. L1 Says:

    I’m L1 and I’m dumb

  30. Wow Says:

WOW…Do I get to throw my jibberish 2-cents too? YAY!

1.Topic is stupid, and has little to no truth.
2.Your thought was worth a try. Better luck next time.

  31. lchan Says:

well honestly, these hairstyles aren’t good examples…
i think it is true that caucasians might not understand asians as much, but there’s no need to say it in such a demeaning manner…
gosh, asians don’t understand caucasians either.
and no, hairstyles do vary across asia, but they do share similar features.

  32. moimoi Says:

I came also came here to look for some cool hairstyles and I completely disagree with the article (?). Sorry. It does sound a little bit narrow minded and childish saying MOST Asians sport the same hairstyles. It’s too much of a generalization.

I’m also Asian (but either way it’s rude the way you brush off some Caucasians who voice their opinion. They’re Caucasian, not bald or blind! Even in their countries no one has the same hairstyles).

Ergo, MOST (most means like, 90% of all Asians?) Asians don’t have the same hairstyles (but Japanese hairstyles are popular amongst SOME hip individuals :-). and MOST Asians don’t have naturally straight hair (I don’t as well). Maybe you’re referring to Oriental Asians, I don’t know. That’s all.

  34. ka yun Says:

umm… ok. whats with the racist comments? thank you Ichan & Surianee. but really, how the fuck cares? if u think they look alike, good for you… if u think they look different, good for you. whatever. I think hair styles are similar one people who like similar fashions nad have similar lifestyles… damn. w/e

  35. ka yun Says:

sorry… I misspelt some stuff. its “who the fuck cares?” and “similar for people” not “one people”
    :)

  36. Chiaki Says:

Erm…I just want to add the point that this article does not give any supported evidence to its thesis? Not that I’m against anything. It works as a blog cos it’s a personal thing but the content crumbles cos it does not really explain why? That’s just my opinion. I myself dun really agree with the blog because the terms short, long and straight are very superficial descriptions for hair. Really. People can have 50/50 of short or long, 50/50 of curly or straight…and it applies to every human being…maybe should have gone into the different kinds of cuts…like layered, straight cut and etc…which perhaps will give a more sound thesis as to why all asians have the same typical hairstyles…(perhaps name the hairstyles too, and not just straight, curly, short or long…its pretty on the surface i’d say…)

To make a point to some other comments, most PURE asians have straight hair because of their cylindrical hair follicle structure and most caucasians have wavy or curly hair because of their flat follicle structure. Does tat explain anything?

  37. Chiaki Says:

oh ya…for asians, i refer to chinese asians (japanese, taiwanese, singaporeans, koreans…etc…you know what i meant)

  38. Chiaki Says:

Erm…oh ya. I don’t quite get the link when u suddenly mentioned m’sia. what does it gotta do with ur former thesis of saying that
“Hairstyles for Japanese, Korea, Chinese and Taiwanese are similar to one another because they copy each other.”?

  39. The Expedited Writer Says:

The link is that the peeps in the south east asian countries do share the same taste in hairstyle. While Japan and Korean acting like the main hub, the rest of the East Asian countries follow suit. The Chinese people in Kuala Lumpur, for example, modeled their fashion from Japan and Korea. You’ll be surprised when u walk down the streets of KL really.

  40. ara Says:

hey. i’m Indonesian, and i have a brunette curly messy hair.
when you’re talking bout asian hairstyles, are you talking bout only – east asian hair styles? because Indonesia is a part of south east asia, and most of our local – truly indonesian, without any mix – has curly one. only Chinese and Caucasian mixed Indonesian who has a truly straight hair that would suit the East Asian hairstyles.

i think that those razor cut, edgy messy cool cartoon like hair cut was invented in Japan, Korea and Taiwan. And yes, most asian would love to have this hair, not every asian, just most. at least you’ll find it in many places. i myself would love too, but i can’t because i have this curly hair. so i just concentrated to the short razor cut based on Japanese style that would suit my curly hair. but that mix comes up into a WESTERN style. honest.

you only need to cut a curly one with the japanese style, and you’ll get the western look.

just as easy as that is.

    haha

    GBU.

  41. mike Says:

why do some people think only women can have the hairstyles they are use to having. Society is so vaine and affraid to experiment with their hair. any style of hair a women has, a man can have the same also as long as he has the right type of hair. Its seems men are being neglected in the united kingdom. Like why is it in society women are always considered to bear long hair and not men in employment. THis attitude is so dumb. i want to try every different type of hairstyle that a women can have done. who’s to say only a women can have a womens type of cut. Were all the same.

  42. Ignorant You Says:

It rather obvious that the author has little exposure to the various culture ( I don’t think she/he every stay long enough in all the countries mentioned to have hair cut/perm/style there) Author had made a made a shallow personal judgement . For example, Japanese and Taiwanese don’t want to look Korean. Besides, the climate(humidity) in SE Asia countries made it impossible to maintain the same look compared to North Asia.
My advice to author: Spend some money to get the imported magazines from the countries mentioned before you derive your perception.

  43. mang Says:

I think anyone can have any hairstlye they want. Even if it’s from girly girls to emo style. I am getting a hair cut over the summer and I want it to be short and straight. I’ve seen lots of pictures, but none seem to fit ME.

  44. yang Says:

everyone has their right to say what they want. i guess the problem here is miscommunication. writer wants to explain something but had the wrong choice of words thus making it hard for reader to understand and just assumes what he/she had read is the same as what the writer wants to imply. the difference of cultures really matter in communication. so read twice or thrice before posting any comments..

  45. singaporian. Says:

Mos… white styles are suck dude… i went to couple salon in the U.S and it just take them 5 minutes to cut my hair. and the option is only 5, 7, or 10… what the heck man… that;s why white never got styles like asian.. lol peace!!

  46. donna Says:

honestly i think asian hairstyles are best thery texyter of hair not so much but ther styles are great

  47. X-change student Says:

that hairstyles are so old!!! it was popular in Central Asian countries like 5-7 years ago
