Yes, because we all know that Victorian style is a 100% japanese creation and have nothing to do with that pesky queen named Victoria…

A lot of Japan’s fashion is actually highly influenced by the US and other countries. In this case lolita looks heavily like (and as Coligny said) Victorian clothing. The Japanese just “cutesy-fy” the creations and bring it to a new level, I think. It’s cool. I think lolita is lovely, but I honestly hope it NEVER becomes popular in America … >_> Too many pedos would like that. Keep the “I must look doll-like and innocent/cute/10 years old” in Japan please :(.

The Japanese are known for revamping things that are not theirs and make it their own. But in this case, the EGL, Ganguro, etc has become a Japanese-only style even though it was inspired by western fashion.
And funnily enough, traditional japanese wear became a fashion statement in the western world too few years back, if you remembered. The kimono was rendered into just a top or a patch at the back of a pair of expensive jeans.
Inter-changeably, I would say it’s an interesting cultural marriage of two civilizations but for the mockingbirds, it is bloody murder to the evolution of fashion and culture.

Kimono is the same story as the usual real life drama concerning japanese traditions and ceremonies. The locals don’t give a damn about it anymore and it’s the durty fureigners that perpetuate the traditions as a choosen way of life.
As much as I like to crap on anything japanese, I can’t imagine wearing anything else than a jembe (or jimbe, or whatever it’s called) during the summer heat…
