Japan Fashion Week’s Spring 2009 collection was showcased in New York! New York! on Sept 1. I can’t believe I missed that.
Anyway, the designers that were featured are Ato, Mikio, Sakabe, Somarta, Ylang-Ylang, G.V.G.V., Mercibeaucoup and Ne-Net. The fashion show was held at Aloha Rag too.
Japan Fashion Week’s Spring 2009 season of collections commences on Sept. 1, but for those New York residents unable to make the journey to Tokyo, Japan Fashion Week (JFW) organized a showcase of some of Japan’s most promising emerging designers—Ato, Mikio Sakabe, Somarta, Ylang-Ylang, G.V.G.V., Mercibeaucoup and Ne-Net—at the newly opened Japanese-owned boutique Aloha Rag on Tuesday, Aug. 19, in New York.
The designs on view offered a distinct sampling of the range of styles that will be present at Japan Fashion Week. From the humor and whimsy of Ne-Net (a printed sweatshirt dress had a hood that resembled bunny ears) to the bold, almost cartoonish work of Mercibeaucoup, to the couture finishing of Somarta modern elegance of Ato, JFW hoped that with the impressive selection they would bolster the visibility of Japanese fashion design in the U.S., and perhaps encourage more foreign press and buyers to travel to Tokyo for the collections in the future. Last season, JFW reported a 25 percent increase in the number of foreign media in attendance.
Another case in point of the increased awareness of emerging Japanese talent: Alongside the JFW mannequins and models at Aloha Rag, the store’s own rack of pieces by Ylang-Ylang were on sale, an indication of the increasing availability of some of these Japanese designers stateside.

I don’t really know what to make out of some of the fashion showcased here..
Some of them are breathtakingly pretty but some are …rather weird, to put it mildly. Of course, a lot of fantasy theme are incorporated in the styles illustrated in this video. Naturally.
Omg…that dress. That dress. It’s gorgeous.

I am talking about the black and white contrast dress the girl on the right is wearing. This is part of Armani’s Fall 2008 couture fashion show.

Gucci’s Fall/Winter 2008 Collection is inspired by a Russian gypsy punk band called The Bordello’s (insider’s info). So styles that looks pseudo-military and heavy embellishments are common within this collection as you will see.

The fashion sub-cultures of Japan has a wide spread of followers from around the world. Check out this EGL fashion show in Holland 2008.
You need to check out Issey Miyake’s fall fashion for 2008-9, they are stunning and quite sensational. Not all of his designs are made for daily wear, flamboyant as they are but then again you never know when you’re on the streets of Japan.
Check out the link to his fashion mag: Issey Miyake 2008/2009
I’ve blogged so much about Japanese street fashion, I feel like I have neglected the traditional aspect of Japanese fashion. Who says tradition has to be boring? The Japanese Women’s Society Foundation would like to digress and present you with their ultra hip fashion show utilizing kimono and it’s materials by a couture fashion designer, Chieko Yamaguchi.
Excellent fashion show in 9 parts on the latest Spring and Summer fashion in Japan. The clothes are designed for women for daily wear. It’s definitely a show to check out.
