What’s this?

I found the most ugliest shirt in Onatoko today. I don’t know why would anyone wear it because the lingerie is just pasted on a tshirt. Is it suppose to be body hugging? If it’s a corset, then it might be a different story but that’s like slapping on some black lace with nothing for your figure whatsoever and that’s that.

I know it’s suppose to be tshirt but i still think it’s rather awful. To each their own I suppose. If you don’t think it’s awful then ….well, whatever rocks your boat really.

It’s called Faux Lingerie Tee

Meh!

Sorry, I just don’t find it appealing at all. It’s their new arrivals too. The other stuff looks like grandma-ish, sad to say.

Wacky Japanese T-Shirts

I found some pretty wacky Japanese t-shirts online that I thought I’d share with you. Thank god for the translations (as some of them were in Kanji), I am able to understand the funny behind it! Some are written in horrible broken English because it’s funny, i guess. Some are in kanji.

Anyway, here are some of them now (note that some of these t-shirts were taken off jlist.com)

sonno-joi_97.jpg

It says: “Support the Emperor and Expel the Foreign Barbarians!” I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing this really..:P

seppuku_shirt_20.jpg

It says: “In Case of Emergency, Commit Seppuku”

Ugh…awful. The murder of English!

Whatever that means.

Nintendo T-shirts!

Jean Snow blogged about the Nintendo T-shirts about a fortnight ago, then Kotaku and Game Set Watch picked up on it and then I guess the interest in the T-shirts from The King Of Games must have skyrocketed in Western countries because the website has spawned an English section where it will accept Paypal payments and ship overseas.

I’ve mentioned before that Japan is famous for it’s T-shirt designs. This is another example of it. Plus it has the Nintendo video game bent so I like it twice as much!

By the way, for those who think that the US$50 is a bit much, my message is: don’t be surprised. There’s plenty of cool cheap T-shirts in Japan but most of the designer stuff is about this price.

Shoichi Aoki’s other magazines

Shoichi Aoki is one very cool 55 year old. I wrote about his magazine FRUiTS yesterday, but he has two other magazines that he publishes monthly.

STREET magazine again follows street fashion, but from the major cities around the world. It was started by Aoki in 1985 in London, and is still going strong today. It’s fair to say that STREET magazine helped introduce street fashion to the Japanese youth.

The cities he visits each issue are printed on the cover, and it is available by subscription (or you can order back issues) from the website.
http://www.street-mg.com

TUNE magazine is a mere 10 issues old. It is based once more in Japan and can almost be seen as a male version of FRUiTS (which isn’t entirely true since plenty of males appear in FRUiTS). The photos aren’t necessarily limited to Harajuku either, the spiritual home of FRUiTS. Nevertheless, if you like your street fashions to be a bit grittier and masculine, TUNE is for you.

Back issues and subscriptions are available again from his website: http://www.street-mg.com

While thse two magazines aren’t as famous as FRUiTS, they are very interesting to read to see where Aoki has come from (STREET) and where he’s going (TUNE).

FRUiTS

FRUiTS is a monthly magazine published by photographer Shoichi Aoki in Japan. It started in 1997 after Aoki noticed a new trend in fashion among young people in Harajuku. Instead of a fashion trend that was dictated by designers, this was a trend started by the young people themselves.

Young people would mix traditional Japanese clothing such as kimonos or geta sandals, with Western or local Japanese designs, even with punk clothing. These people were not brand obsessed like most Japanese people are known to be. They developed a “Harajuku Free Style” fashion trend which Aoki wanted to document in FRUiTS.

Since the trend began in the mid-nineties, the street style has expanded to cover many sub-genres, like punk, Decorer, Gothic Lolita or just kawaii.

The trend has died down in recent years – probably due to the fact that Omotesando (the main street in Harajuku) isn’t closed to cars on Sundays anymore, so the FRUiTS kids no longer have anywhere to hang out. Aoki still manages to publish a magazine each month though, especially since the magazine has achieved cult status in both Japan and overseas.

FRUiTS is a great look into the minds and fashions of Harajuku youth and is available by subscription, or in two volumes of books from Phaidon Press.

The T-shirt Diaries

T-Shirts in Japan are a fashion accessory taken way beyond the “classic” status that they hold everywhere else around the world. There are shops dedicated to T-shirts and many designers display them like pieces of art (which, to be fair, some are). The designs printed on them are befuddling, artistic, kawaii, colourful and sometimes just plain weird.

Recently, there has even been an exhibition entitled T-shirts as Media (link found through Jean Snow). In fact, the whole website (www.tshirtsasmedia.com) is worth perusing (all in Japanese though).

Designer T-shirts from Japan
Most of the designer T-shirts you’ll find in shops are mens but hopefully there’ll be a few baby cut womens tees as I plan to acquire some!

Uniqlo T05

Uniqlo T05

If you don’t know Uniqlo and you live in the US, start looking forward to the day they will open shops there, because apparently they are seriously talking about it. If you live in the UK, go there and buy lots of stuff because apparently sales are not going so well. If you are in Japan, you must be blind. If you are anywhere else, tough luck…

Uniqlo is a chain of clothes stores with many shops everywhere in Tokyo, and throughout Japan. They sell all kind of clothes and accessories at very affordable prices and overall they are comparable to GAP in terms of quality and style, except much cheaper and with more choice in the “basic” stuff. Overall, Uniqlo has a bad reputation among snob people, and a very good reputation among people who’d rather buy a white T-shirt and a grey cotton pair of socks somewhere else than at (insert very expensive brand here that manufacture their products in China anyway)…

But what Uniqlo does VERY WELL, is their T-shirt campaign just before Summer. The one for this year, “T05″, has just started, and it is full of goodness (if you don’t feel like taking my word for it, just go and visit the website).

Why are these T’s so great, you ask. And I answer. Every year now, Uniqlo summer T-shirts series features a whole bunch of designers and studios, some famous, some less famous. But many of them and many very different designs. But that is not all of course: they also got the rights for some Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and Roy Lichtenstein. So you get your usual cliche stuff, but you also have a few very recognizable yet original designs. But there’s more. They also got the rights for certain Fonts from the Linotype Foundry too. T-shirts with the name of the font written proudly on the chest, in its own typeface. This year, Eurostile and Gill Sans are really extremely cool. Or maybe I’m a geek. Difficult to know for sure, sometimes…

And if you’re not satisfied yet, they also have a whole series of american Colleges logos, and also music instruments/equipment brands. Oh, and by the way, most of these designs come in a choice of several colors shirts. Enough?

So, cool designs, but that happens everywhere all the time, you say. And you are right. But that is because I haven’t finished yet. I haven’t mentioned that except for the Warhol/Haring/Lichtenstein series that sell for 1,500 yen per shirt (that means less than 15$), the other series sell for 1,000 yen each (i.e. less than 10$). And we are talking silk screen printing on good quality thick cotton shirts… Now, go visit their (flash) website and dare telling me there is not one shirt you would spend 10 bucks for (and look sexy all summer)!

Come on, which ones do you like most?
